Your Skin Doesn’t Need More—It Needs the Right Support

The truth about barrier repair, over-moisturizing, and why “less is more” isn’t just a cute saying.
Last week’s blog came straight from a question I get asked all the time—“Can you still wear makeup with a tallow-based routine?”—and the response was amazing.
(If you missed it, go back and read—it’s packed with helpful tips and a sweet shoutout to my cousin Maddie.)
This week, I’m answering another real-life question—one I’ve heard from customers, friends, and people just starting to switch to natural skincare:
“I’m using so many products… but my skin still feels dry, irritated, or kind of tight. What am I doing wrong?”
And I get it. When your skin feels off, it’s natural to want to reach for more. More mists. More serums. More overnight masks. But here’s the truth: your skin might not need more products. It might just need the right support—the kind that helps it heal and function the way it was meant to.
🔍 The Myth of More
We’ve been told by brands (and influencers with 15-step routines) that more products = better skin. But the reality? Overloading your skin—especially if your barrier is already stressed—can do more harm than good.
❌ Too many actives
❌ Fragrance-heavy products
❌ Constant cleansing
❌ Switching up your routine weekly
These things chip away at your skin’s natural ability to protect, hydrate, and regulate itself.
Your skin doesn't want a full-time job processing product after product. It wants a little breathing room.

🧬 What Is the Skin Barrier—and Why It’s Everything
Your skin barrier is your body’s built-in defense system. Think of it like a beautiful brick wall made of skin cells (bricks) and natural oils (mortar). When it’s healthy, it locks in moisture and keeps out irritants .When it’s damaged? You’ll feel it.
Signs of a compromised barrier:
Skin that always feels dry no matter what you use
Burning or stinging when applying products
Random breakouts or texture
Increased redness and sensitivity
You don’t need more product—you need a product that helps rebuild the “mortar.”
That’s where tallow comes in.
✨ Why Tallow Works (And Why Less Really Is More)
Grass-fed tallow is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. It’s also structurally similar to the oils your skin naturally produces. That’s why it absorbs so beautifully, especially when paired with other ingredients like raw honey, jojoba oil, and castor oil.
At Tallow&Honey, I formulated our 3-step routine to do exactly that:
Cleanse without stripping
Tone without irritating
Moisturize without blocking your skin’s own process
If you’re stuck in the cycle of applying more and more but still feeling dry, reactive, or “off,” this might be your turning point.

🌿 Your Skin Might Just Need a Reset
Here’s what I always recommend when someone’s barrier is crying out:
Ditch the foam. Swap any foaming cleanser for an oil-based one (like “Honey I’m Cleansed”)
Keep it simple. Use one toner, one balm. That’s it. No need for 6 different layers
Be consistent. Give your skin time to adjust. No jumping around every few days
Focus on healing. Avoid AHAs, retinols, and harsh exfoliants while you repair
Bonus points if you:
Drink filtered, mineral-rich water 💧
Eat healthy fats like tallow, olive oil, and avocado 🥑
Let your skin soak up a few minutes of early morning sunlight ☀️
